TRAINING PROGRAM OUTLINE

This introductory training program is designed for livestock producers and technicians seeking to develop foundational skills in sheep pregnancy scanning.

The course provides a blended learning experience, combining online theory with an intensive hands-on practical workshop.

This approach ensures participants develop both the underpinning knowledge and practical skills required to apply sheep pregnancy scanning techniques in real-world livestock environments.

Participants will gain an understanding of sheep reproductive anatomy, ultrasound equipment operation, and pregnancy diagnosis techniques, while developing confidence in livestock handling and scanning procedures within a controlled, low-stress environment.

 

REQUIREMENTS

To successfully participate in this training program, students should:

  • Have an interest in livestock and reproduction management
  • Be comfortable undertaking online learning and self-directed study
  • Possess basic literacy skills
  • Have basic computer skills and the ability to access and participate in online sessions
  • Have access to a computer with internet connection to complete the online learning components of the course

DURATION

  • This Training Program takes approx. 3 weeks in total - part time.

  • This includes: approx. 1 hour online induction webinar and 2 weeks is allowed for self-paced online learning to be completed prior to the Practical Training sessions

  • Then engage in research and self directed learning to consolidate understanding and prepare for practical training

  • 2 days face to face, practical training

CAREER AND STUDY PATHWAYS

Sheep pregnancy scanning is a specialised, seasonal skill that is highly valued within the livestock and wool industries. Developing capability in this area can provide opportunities for flexible work, business growth, and further career progression, depending on experience, industry exposure, and additional training.

Upon completion of an introductory sheep scanning course, students may begin developing their skills in roles such as:

  • Livestock scanning assistant
  • Farm hand with a reproduction focus
  • Sheep yard support roles
  • Livestock producer incorporating scanning into their own enterprise

These roles provide valuable industry experience and help build confidence in:

  • Animal handling and efficient yard flow
  • Understanding sheep reproductive processes
  • Supporting experienced pregnancy scanners
  • Applying scanning knowledge within practical livestock operations

With continued experience and further training, participants can progress towards more advanced livestock reproduction roles and expand their capabilities within the agricultural sector.

DELIVERY

  • This program is delivered through a blended learning model, combining online theory and face-to-face practical training.

  • Participants will complete the online induction, learning content, prior to attending the practical component, ensuring they have the foundational knowledge required.

  • The face-to-face training is conducted on-property, where participants engage in supervised, hands-on practical application using industry-standard equipment and livestock handling systems.

  • This approach ensures a balance between flexible learning and real-world skill development aligned with current industry practices.

  • Student numbers are kept at 6 per training program to ensure high practical, hands on experience and to support best practice animal welfare and ethical standards when working with sheep during training.

TRAINING LOCATIONS AND DATES

  • Training is delivered at a premium, industry-relevant location in Northern New South Wales (NSW),  to ensure participants gain exposure to a range of livestock operations and high-quality facilities.

  • Additional locations may be scheduled, if demand allow. 

  • Minimum numbers required and courses will only proceed where minimum participant numbers are met. 

  • If numbers are not sufficient, the course may be rescheduled or relocated.

  • Due to the practical nature of our livestock training programs, each one requires careful planning, venue and livestock coordination, and Animal Ethics approval before it can be scheduled.

  • Specific dates for each location are released periodically and can be accessed via Catagra Group Training or upon enquiry, allowing participants to select the most suitable time and location for their training needs.

  • PLEASE NOTE: the start date for each Training Program is the date of the Online Induction Session. The Practical Sessions are approx. 2 x weeks after the Induction Session. PLEASE ENSURE YOU ARE AVAILABLE FOR THE PRACTICAL SESSION DATES prior to enrolling.

COST, REFUND & CANCELLATION

  • Total Training Program fee is $1800.00 

  • This fee covers both online and practical training

  • Commencement of training is defined as the point at which the learner is granted access to learning materials, online systems, or participates in any training or assessment activity.
